The many studies that have been carried have not established a concrete cause of mental illness. Recent researches however, have established that mental illness among men and women is not caused by character defect or personal weakness. Mental illness is as a result of combination of psychological, biological, genetic and environmental factors.

Statistics for mental illness between men and women

Recent analyses that were carried out in Oxford University found out that women are 40% more likely to suffer from mental illness than men. This analysis was drawn from epidemiological studies in the US, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

Also, according to the British Mental Health Foundation, more women than men are treated for mental illness. Their statistics show that the percentage for women treated for mental illness is 29% as compared to 17% of that of men with mental illness. The argument for this imbalance has been there for many years since also all types of mental disorders have a wide gender divide.

Women are more likely to be affected and diagnosed with depression and anxiety while men are diagnosed with antisocial disorders or substance abuse. Besides, women are more likely to internalize emotions. As a consequence, they get withdrawal symptoms, depression and sense of loneliness. On the contrary, men externalize, their emotions hence resulting into coercive, aggressive, and impulsive behavior.

The ability to either internalize or externalize emotions has accounted for the imbalance in the prevalence rates of mental illness between men and women. The reason as to why women suffer more from depression is that they repetitively focus on their problems and emotions rather than taking the step of solving those problems.

When they suffer from these problems, they take the problems on themselves. On the other hand, men take their problems out on their environment hence they take drugs and vent their anger out.

Social stresses among women have played a big role in making them more vulnerable to mental illness. For instance, women’s roles and the need for them to juggle between multiple roles have emotional costs on them. Women are also more likely to experience childhood sexual abuse than men. This is a trauma that has lifetime psychological damage.

The following factors explain why more women seek for treatment from mental illness.

  1. Women are more likely to seek help than men. According to studies, men are more reluctant to admit their “unmasculine” feelings.
  2. Women are subjected to more societal pressure. This enormous pressures have greatly contributed to mental illness
  3. The likelihood of women to be abused or be poor are among the social and psychological factors that increase overall mental illness among women
  4. The ruminative nature of women is a great contributory factor to developing stress.
  5. The stress hormones in women’s brains respond differently to stress as compared to men
  6. Hormonal imbalances from adolescence to pregnancy and menopause play havoc with women’s mood.
  7. Genetically, women are more likely to get stressed up. This is according to a study of 2974 sets of twins both male and female.
