In the 1950’s the norm in some communities, encouraged by hairdressers, was to have one’s hair “professionally” washed when it was cut or “styled”–once a week–and avoid washing the hair at home. With glee undiluted after sixty years, a former hairdresser describes how a customer who always demanded special favors, never tipped, and was usually rude, got her hair style just right and walked out without a hat…just beneath a passing seagull. “She was the type to walk around like that all week, until she meets this famous agent in public, and I wouldn’t be the one washing her hair next week.”
